Magadi Hospital is located at Lake Magadi, some 120km south-west of Nairobi, where Tata Chemicals Magadi (TCM) has its facility.
The region is semi-arid and sparsely populated with a poor road network. The semi-nomadic Maasai who inhabit the area make what living they can from rearing livestock. The region faces many problems - frequent droughts, poverty, scarcity of clean water, poor sanitation, low literacy rate and poor physical infrastructure. These factors act in concert to present the community with a host of health problems. Further to these problems, HIV/AIDS is now emerging as a new epidemic in the community and demands to be addressed urgently.
Within an 80km radius from Magadi there are no other hospital facilities; Magadi Hospital therefore has a wide catchment area with a population of about 30,000 people.
In this difficult environment, the 55-bed Magadi Hospital strives to provide much needed comprehensive health care services to both TCM employees and the surrounding community. Services offered to the local community are subsidized to the tune of 75 per cent.
Facilities
The hospital has a full staff of doctors, clinical officers, nurses, ward assistants, lab technologist, and administrative and support people, totaling a team of more than 20.
The outpatient facilities include four consulting rooms, treatment unit, observation ward, maternal and child health unit, family planning unit, pharmacy, dental unit and x-ray unit. The hospital has its own ambulance.
The inpatient facilities include six wards with 55 beds and a fully equipped operating theatre and sterilization unit.
Outpatient services and child welfare clinic
This includes treatment of medical conditions, minor surgical procedures, immunizations, ante-natal and post-natal care, family planning services, laboratory examinations, radiological examinations, medical examinations, fully fledged pharmacy, VCT, health education talks and counselling. About 60 per cent of outpatient visits are from the local community.
Inpatient services
Over 95 per cent of admissions were from the local community. The most common reasons for admission are malaria, diarrhea diseases, anemia, respiratory infections, childbirth, and accidents.
Outreach services
For the local population that lives more than 10km away from the hospital, health care services are offered through outreach mobile clinics. The clinics treat minor ailments, provide immunization, examine pregnant mothers, give health education talks and sell insecticide-treated bed nets.
The Rotary Doctor Bank also assists with provision of these outreach services. The services have achieved a marked reduction in the prevalence of preventable diseases such as measles, polio, and whooping cough among the local population.
Whenever possible clean water is also provided using a water bowser.
