Crushed Refined Soda (CRS) is naturally occurring Sodium Sesquicarbonate obtained by the crushing and washing the ore from Lake Magadi. With a chemical composition of Na2CO3.NaHCO3.H2O. CRS is available wet with a surface moisture of 4% and dry with a surface moisture of 1%.
Applications of Crushed Refined Soda
1. Manufacture of Soda ASH – The main application of CRS is in the manufacture of Soda Ash where the Sesquicarbonate is thermally decomposed into sodium carbonate. This may be dissolved and recrystallized to form purer grade.
2. Manufacture of Sodium Silicate – CRS is also used in some cases as the sodium source in manufacture of sodium silicate, as an alternative to soda ash.
3. Animal feed additive – Natural Sodium Sesquicarbonate is a mineral that is fed to livestock as a rumen buffer. To achieve best results, 10kg may be added to 1 ton of non-forage grain portion. Sodium Sesquicarbonate neutralizes and provides pH buffering in the rumen, allowing digestive enzymes to work optimally. This increases feed conversion and absorption by livestock.
4. Raw tobacco chewing – In some cultures CRS is rolled in Betel leaves with tobacco and chewed.
5. Mining applications – CRS has been applied in leach mining for Uranium and Bentonite. CRS solution is direct replacement of a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate.
6. Metallurgy – CRS is used in conservation of copper and copper alloy artefacts. Treatment with CRS removes copper II from the corroded layer. CRS is also used in lead smelting as a fluxing agent.
7. Effluent treatment – CRS solution is a strong alkalizing agent, at pH 11, maybe applied to bring acidic effluents to neutral pH.
8. Water treatment – CRS is used as a precipitating water softener, which combines calcium and magnesium to form an insoluble precipitate removing hardness. It is also in bath salts, swimming pools and as an alkalinity source in water treatment.
9. Flue gas treatment – CRS can be applied both as a solution or in solid form to scrub flu gas, and has excellent adsorption of NOXs and SOXs and additionally traps Carbon dioxides gas, treating toxic gases to environmentally friendly standards.
10. Compost treatment - CRS can be applied in composts for pH buffering, allowing microbes good environment for acting on biomaterial. At the same time the bicarbonate component of CRS works as a fiber softener, breaking down plant material for microbe action.
11. Pit latrine treatment – same concept as compost treatment, Microbes consuming biomaterial also themselves excrete in the same environment, over a period of time the environment pH will lower tending to acidity, this conditions are not suitable for the actions of these microbes and they would become inefficient. CRS provides pH buffering, creating optimal conditions for decomposition.
