Nano Zinc Oxide


Enhancing the protective action of personal care products

The distinctive property to block UVA and UVB sun rays makes zinc oxide one of the most important ingredients in a variety of cosmetic and personal care products including baby care, oral care and skin care products. Zinc oxide also acts as an SPF booster and has antimicrobial properties. The applications of nano zinc oxide in cosmetics and personal care include,

  • Sunscreen creams and lotions with varying SPF ratings.
  • Baby diaper anti-rash creams.
  • Avobenzone-free sunscreens.
  • Fully inorganic / physical sunscreens.
  • Talcum powder, lip balm, BB cream, CC cream and other colour cosmetics.

Nano zinc oxide also has acid scavenging, heat resistance and UV protection characteristics which enables its use in general products such as home care products; paints, coatings and adhesives; and plastics and polymers.

Tata Chemicals (TCL) manufactures a variety of nano zinc oxide — ZnCare C, Zing C, ZnSpers AB50, ZnSpers AQ40, ZnSpers CT 50, and ZnSpers Ti 50-2, which are dispersible and transparent zinc oxide grades, produced through a patented process. These are available in two forms, micro fine powder and organic and aqueous dispersion forms.

The distinguishing factor of TCL’s nano zinc oxide is its protective action against a broad spectrum of UV rays. It blocks UVA I from 400-340nm, UVA II from 340-320nm and UVB from 320-290nm. It also has an ultrafine particle size that ensures more than 95 percent transparency in the visible spectrum of light. Plus, the ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) makes it an antifungal and antimicrobial additive.

It can be used by itself or combined with an organic and inorganic UV blocker to boost the SPF and PA rating. The product is free from heavy metal impurities and is easily dispersible because of its patented manufacturing process.
